A Day in the Life

  • Stays current with and understands relevant product intended use, clinical procedures, and related regulations and standards.

  • Works with a multidisciplinary team to develop innovative healthcare solutions from concept through commercialization.

  • Participates in development of user needs, translation of system and subsystem requirements, ensuring requirements flow.

  • Creates product designs which fully address targeted user needs/requirements, and all stakeholders.

  • Participates in FMEAs, Usability, DFM & DFA Analyses, and follows up on generated recommendations.

  • Creates BOM’s, detailed component and assembly drawings utilizing GD&T

  • Prepares and reviews information for invention disclosures and patents.

  • Assess, troubleshoot and compare multiple designs, utilizingappropriate criteria-based methods.

  • Develop test plans and execute benchtop, ex-vivo, and in-vivo testing to verify designs.

  • Analyzes test results using appropriate analytical and statistical methods. Document in an Engineering Test Report

  • Participates and supports pre-clinical labs, observe cases in hospitals and interact with customers.

  • Supports Design Verification and Validation activities for New Product Development.

  • Provides technical support for new product launches and market released product such as marketing claims, sales collateral, field return analysis.

  • Adheres to Medtronic’s good engineering practices (DRM).

  • Trains and mentors less experienced R&D Engineers and cross-functional peers on product design and development.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs, develops, analyzes, troubleshoots and provides technical skills during research and/or product development.

  • Designs studies to investigate specific life science questions within field of expertise.

  • May be involved in product research and development and/or clinical trials.

  • Translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, or related engineering field with 4+ years of experience or a Master’s degree with a minimum of 2+ years of experience.

  • Demonstrated product design and development execution with a multi-disciplinary project team from user need identification/concept ideation through commercialization.

  • Experienced with working solely, in a group, and across multiple functions.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to deliver professional communications.

  • Experience in PLM, 3D CAD, Tolerance stacks, FEA’s.

  • Familiarity with Plastic & Metal manufacturing methods.

  • Proficient in writing test protocols, and engineering test reports.

  • Experienced with building prototypes, debugging designs, and performing root cause analysis.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of statistics with application to sample size determination, design of experiments and null hypothesis testing.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Experienced with FDA and ISO medical standards.

  • Experience working with DC motors, PCBA’s and switches.

  • Software Proficiency:

  • Creo (3D Part & Assy, Drawing, Surfacing)

  • Minitab (Statistics)

  • Windchill (PLM)

  • Mathcad

  • Creo Simulation Live, Ansys (FEA)

  • Cetol (Tolerance analysis)

  • Advanced working knowledge of ASME GD&T standards with application to product design

  • Design for Six Sigma or equivalent certification.

  • Experience design & developing disposable and reusable medical devices.
